About

Hi. My name is Julian, and if you don’t know that by now my website is failing on a basic level. When describing myself and what I do I like to use a lot of forward slashes. So here goes… I’m a British/ American (Born in Boston, raised in Oxford), freelance Actor/ Director and sometimes writer (on some projects I combine all three, sometimes I just do one.) And… co-artistic director of Rhum and Clay Theatre Company.

As a child I slowly began to realise that however hard I pretended to be Robin Hood, I wouldn’t actually grow up to be him. So I set about forging a career in the art of pretending. I gained a BA in Drama: Theatre, Film & Television at Bristol University and then studied for two years at Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. I then co-founded Rhum and Clay Theatre company with a gang of rapscallions (Kristoffer Huball and Christopher Harrisson) and now run the company alongside compadre Matthew Wells.

My work is iconoclastic & magical realist. It is always playful & visually arresting. I’m often inspired by Americana and modern mythology, and how the fictional tales we tell ourselves can reveal who we really are. More than anything I try to search for what connects us, and moments of truth in recognition.
